You have a talented kid there De.
Looks like a computer on a small board . . .
with an interface display.

Did he download the program into it via USB?

Very cool little project.
Congratulations to Joey.

Zim.

Joey has been playing a computer game in which total mastery is achieved by capturing exactly one of each type of creature. There are well over 400 types. If you capture two of the same type, you can't release the second one and the slot another one needs is permanently occupied making it impossible to complete the task. Clearly, it's a difficult challenge.

Fortunately, he's a little bit like his old man, kind of anal about certain things, particularly when he's been challenged.

Over the last two weeks, he built and programmed his own computer. I mean, he REALLY built it - from components he ordered off an electronics supply house. It cost him 40 bucks. This thing is the size of a deck of cards and fits easily in his pants pocket. It has 256k of RAM and an on-board display that is the size of a 50 cent piece. He then wrote a program in C that maps the pixels for every letter in the alphabet, burned it to a chip on his machine, and the program then displays the names of each creature and whether he has already captured it. As you can see below, he can even display images. He has a switch that lets him scroll through all 400. Right now, the machine is powered by USB, but he says he's going to add a battery.

This is REALLY cool. He did it in two weeks? I wouldn't have thought it possible. I wouldn't have thought of it at all. Two photos follow:
