It's not punishment ... it's simply the logical, predictable consequences of one's actions. Sanctuary cities, counties, and states take direct actions to thwart federal agencies from performing their sworn duties under federal law. Okay ... if they wish to throw infantile temper tantrums that actually put their constituents at a greater risk for harm, that rejection of morality, responsibility, and rationality is an abject failure of their constituents. Personally, if a sanctuary community facilitates the presence of an illegal alien who then does harm to anyone who is a member of a non-sanctuary community, I believe the sanctuary community should be held VERY liable for restoring all damages (and then some for willfully flouting the law) as an accessory to the crime. BUT, it is obvious to any rational adult that, if you willfully choose to NOT cooperate with federal authorities, such federal authorities do NOT need to bend over backwards to cooperate with you. For example, if New York intentionally tries to legitimize the status of foreigners who are in this country illegally by foolishly giving them drivers licenses ... many of whom are criminals in more violent ways than just defying our immigration laws ... and therefore contaminates the pool of New Yorkers with drivers licenses, then the sensible reaction is to hold New York drivers licenses as ineligible as proof for protected status at the federal level. You reap what you sow.
