...and another thing. If ya gets em a creamation ya don't have to worry about the cops diggin em up years later and doing another autopsy. That can be really embarassing.

I think costs play a big role. The average funeral costs between $7,000 and $12,000. Burial plots run another $200 to $2,000. A standard flat headstone adds another $1,000 - more, obviously, for a stone that is more ornate.

Many folks just can't afford today's prices.

The article touches on the second issue, which is that Americans no longer relate to cemetery visits. If they didn't do it, why would they care if anyone visits their grave? Obviously, the sharp decline in churchgoers plays a role. So too does the decline in family size. Finally, there are folks who don't live near their family. A century ago, most folks lived near the family and friends they grew up with. Today, far fewer.
