Qassem Soleimani Haunted the Arab World

http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2020/01/qassem-soleimani-death-missed/604396/

In much of the Middle East, and even in Iran, the military commander was feared, and his death has been greeted with elation.

BEIRUT—As soon as Qassem Soleimani, the leader of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was confirmed dead, lawyers and lawmakers in Washington began their debates. Was the strike that killed him legal? How would the attack play into the political cycle of impeachment and the 2020 presidential campaign? What are the potential consequences of conflict with Iran?

Yet in parts of the Middle East, the reaction was different. Soleimani, a man thought of as invincible and all-powerful in the region, was killed at about 1 a.m. local time, just as he was leaving Baghdad airport. By 4:30 a.m., a group of Iraqis was marching—running, even—though the country’s capital carrying a large Iraqi flag, celebrating his death. In one video, a man’s voice can be heard lauding the killing, saying the deaths of Iraqi protesters had been avenged.

Let’s be clear: Soleimani’s death sharply increases tensions in the Middle East. Just a few days ago, protesters breached the walls of the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. As Kathy Gilsinan and Mike Giglio note, his killing is more consequential than that of Osama bin Laden or Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, because he has an entire state that could seek to avenge him.

"What are the potential consequences of conflict with Iran?"

Let me think.
In a 'conventional war' between iran and the U.S. iran will come
in a poor third. And if iran tries terrorist attacks . . or if
terrorist attacks of 'unknown sources' occur - the result should
be the same. Cruise missiles on the favorite sleeping places of
the iranian ayatollahs. And the sinking of the iranian 'fleets'
and the destruction of the joke iran calls an 'air force'.

Trump tweets only American flag after ordering strike that killed top Iranian general

President Donald J. Trump puts his hand over his heart during the 136th Coast Guard Academy commencement exercise in New London, Conn., May 17, 2017.

Amid reports that a U.S. airstrike killed a top Iranian general and two Iraqi militia leaders late Thursday, President Trump made one simple tweet — an American flag.

The tweet came shortly after the Pentagon confirmed Trump ordered the airstrike at the Baghdad International Airport that killed Gen. Qassim Soleimani, commander of The Quds Force, an elite unit in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

“General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region,” the Pentagon said in a statement. “General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more.”

“This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans,” the statement added. “The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world.”

Earlier on Thursday, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper had warned that the U.S. was ready to take “preemptive action” to protect Americans.

“The game has changed, and we’re prepared to do what is necessary to defend our personnel and our interests and our partners in the region,” Esper told reporters at the Pentagon, according to the Associated Press.

“We will take preemptive action as well to protect American forces and protect American lives,” he added.

Esper also said there were “indications” that Iran may be planning attacks on U.S. targets in the Middle East, and he pointed to numerous attacks on U.S. bases in recent months.

Trump had tweeted a warning to Iran on Tuesday, saying, “Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat. Happy New Year!”

On Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had said Soleimani and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were “working to expand their terror campaign all around the world,” Politico reported.

Pompeo had previously referred to Soleimani as equally dangerous as ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed in a U.S. raid in October.

Deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) militia, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and PMF spokesman Mohammed Reda were also killed in the strike, the Associated Press reported.

As many as eight may have been killed in the attack.

Freelance journalist Ehab Al Obaidy who is reportedly at the scene has shared photos and videos showing burning vehicle wreckage and scattered belongings.

Iraqi militias immediately blamed the U.S. and Israel for the attack.

“The American and Israeli enemy is responsible for killing the mujahideen Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qassem Soleimani,” said Ahmed al-Assadi, PMF spokesman said, according to Reuters.
