But he'd threatened GWB's daddy and GWB wasn't having that ... so we had to kill several hundred thousand Iraqi civilians in order to kill the guy who wasn't hurting us.

As for Afghanistan... *I* think our intelligence, our drones and an elite fighting team could have killed Obama bin Laden more effectively than an all-out offensive eventually did, but we could argue about that all day. I don't see how we can argue about why we're still in Afghanistan NINE YEARS LATER. Oh, yeah: The Taliban. Of course, we aren't going to defeat the Taliban. So we could have left Afghanistan in 2011 as winners and we'll instead exit eventually as losers - big time losers if you consider the money that's been wasted.

As the subject line says, the War On Terror is UNWINNABLE. We don't seem to be very good at figuring that out. The best thing we could do is to go defensive and start protecting our frickin' borders.
