Speaking of Linux . .
The guru at work said I could have an old laptop from one
or our now defunct subsidiaries. But it could not have
a copy of Windows that might track back to our employer.

So I downloaded a recent version of Linux. It installed
so easy on the laptop. Then I brought it home and plugged
in my WiFi internet connection thingie. No harder than it
has been with any other device and the laptop got on line.
I found the 'right place' within its command stuff and
selected the programs related to the Python programming
stuff and told it to install it. Worked Great. The thing
is old, boots up slow, but works well.

Even nicer - it came with that 'Open Office' installed on it.
Meaning I had a word processor and everything but a database
installed. (Plus it has the GUI interface - acts very much
like windoze.

The task of keeping a Windows computer clean is not that simple.

When you buy your computer, Dell, HP and the other manufacturers have ALREADY installed it with bloatware-downloaders. You take it home, it runs nice and fast, but over the next few months it rapidly slows down. If it's on the internet, there's no avoiding this. You bought it already infected.

There IS a solution.

Install linux (I can find you the specific variant if you're interested) and buy a copy of Windows straight from Microsoft. Then configure linux to create a virtual Windows box every time it boots. You can do it so that your specific software will also be part of the virtual machine, and so that your data will NOT be part of it. (You want your data to be able to change; you don't want your software to be able to change.) When your system comes up, it will give you a fresh Windows and software copy every time it starts... practically impossible to infect or corrupt.

Do it right, and you'll never suffer from bloatware or from a virus. Microsoft updates will not be able to touch you.

This is how computers SHOULD operate... but, of course, it's not in keeping with Microsoft's wishes.
