That crazy lady I worked for we swapped out leds for the old. They are 4 times the cost, $100 a piece but man they are nice and bright.. you could prolly cut back 50% on lites........

Some thoughts on shop lights...

The barn's 2nd floor has nine ceiling power outlets, each of which was designed to support two shop lights. That means eighteen lights. Each of the ones I bought is 4300 lumens, but I have no idea what to expect from them. How bright they will actually make the place? Maybe I won't need that many. But since I don't know, I'd better get more than ten while they're still "free." The sale runs from Thursday through Saturday.

I also need as many as eight shop lights in the garage section of the 1st floor. I've got five older shop lights (currently installed upstairs) that can be set up down there. But maybe I'm better off upgrading to LED. As ribit noted, my carbon footprint will otherwise end up being bigger than Al Gore's. (The fluorescent shop lights draw 64 watts. The LED shop lights draw 42.) I'd hate for anyone to mistake me for a wasteful liberal.

I'm reading that the average 4' fluorescent bulb produces 2,850 lumens. My old shop lights have two bulbs - so they produce 5,700 lumens - which is better than the new 4,300 lumen LED shop lights. However, fluorescent bulb emissions are omnidirectional, meaning that they send light every which way. One third of their light goes upward and never really leaves the lamp. The LED shop lights, in contrast, provide directed light and may, therefore, be considerably more effective. 4,300 "directed" lumens may turn out to be better than the 3,800 useful lumens produced by the older fluorescent shop lights.

This will almost certainly be true as the bulbs age. Fluorescent bulbs lose up to 60% of their effectiveness over time. LED lights do not.

My last concern is that the new LED lights have draw strings. I *hope* that doesn't mean that each light has to be turned on by hand every time I enter the barn. That would be a hassle. I want them to be "on" all the time, with a light switch dictating whether they get power.
