An apartment development with no parking for its expected 1,000 residents is planned across from a light-rail station in Tempe.

This will end up being ‘affordable housing’ for low-income residents. I have ridden the light rail and it is like transit for people who can’t afford bus fare. You only have to show that you have paid if tne police come on and check. I know someone who rides it and says that in the morning you have to stand because there are homeless sleeping on all of the seats.

Anyone who can afford better will not want to be limited to the light-rail.

"To our knowledge, this will be the first apartment complex built without parking for residents," said Graham. "It feels like the timing is right. The number of people I know who are carless now is amazing." The development wouldn't be entirely parking-free. There would be guest spaces on site for visitors and parking for the development's commercial retail...MORE
