Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.

Nemo and I are obviously in some kind of a demented contest. I've got a story too.

I mentioned that my wife found some free shelves on Craig's List. Three of them, and the owner had them outdoors, just four miles down our road. All we had to do was to fetch 'em. We headed out with the pickup thinking that if we can't bring them all back, we'll just do multiple trips.

We got there and saw that the shelves were EXTREMELY heavy. They're pressed wood and shaped like a fat letter "A," with shelving on both sides. Great 5-foot units on heavy casters, but massive. A couple of hundred pounds each, I bet. Only one would fit in the truck at a time, and only in one direction (remember, my truck has a shell on it.)

We leaned the first shelf against the tail of the truck, tipped it, I lifted the base and pushed and . . . "owww, my back!!!" (FWIW, I'm not supposed to lift anything heavier than a carton of milk this week. LOL. Serves me right.)

Something in me gave, and the entire rib cage feels it. It's like something moved or went *pop* just below the left shoulder blade. Not my spine, though. (I lift from the knees.) Thank goodness for small favors.

On the way back, I said "We can't do that again." So we unloaded the first shelf (in the driveway) and went out to hook up the flatbed trailer. That was tough too, the worst part being that the trailer's jack stand was resting on a cinder block, and the cinder block was cemented to the ground by ice. Did I mention that it's been cold up here? Yeah, it's cold. 19° right now, with an inch or so of snow in the grass to make getting traction a real pleasure.

I got a sledge hammer thinking I could knock the cinder block loose, whacked it a bunch of times - but the blasted thing didn't budge. The cinder block was giving way before the ice holding it was. We couldn't just pull the flatbed over the cinder block, either. Its axles would have hit the thing. I told my wife (who was driving) to try see-sawing back and forth with the truck and trailer, making sharp turns so as to get the cemented cinder block to emerge from the side of the trailer. We tried, but it took too long and we were running out of daylight, so I just took the sledge hammer and smashed the cinder block into pieces. Then we drove the trailer over it.

We went back for the other two shelves, started loading the first and . . . %@#$!!!!! My back again!!!!! Even worse this time.

We were able to get the second shelving unit onto the flatbed, and the snow residue actually made it easier to slide the thing up the trailer making room for the final one. My wife actually did most of the lifting. I didn't do any further damage to myself.

All three shelves are now sitting outside. Fortunately, it looks like it'll be a clear night. No rain, snow or fog. Tomorrow, or maybe even Friday depending on how I feel, we'll figure out how to get them to the barn. Our steep driveway may cause problems for us when we try pulling the flatbed trailer up it. (Trailers tend to bottom out when going up steep things.) The one break we're getting is that the next two days will be warmer. Any remaining snow will probably dissipate.

I just took two 650 mg tylenols. In a little bit, I don't expect to be feeling any pain.
