Re: "De is doing fine. He had a minor complication during his angiogram, and is awaiting more tests in the morning."
LOL. It wasn't that minor. During the angiogram, my heart went into atrial fibrilation (A-Fib) that would not resolve. For six hours, it was beating half-heartedly (ar ar ar) at 125 to 170 beats per minute. They took me to a recovery room and I had the first migraine I'd had in over a year. (It was undoubtedly caused by dehydration. They wouldn't let me drink.) Four cardiologists were working my case, and they were attempting to assemble a team to perform something called a cardioversion on me. Even the cardioversion was going to be complicated by uncertainty as to whether I'd had previous A-Fib occurrences. Untreated A-Fibs lead to blood clots within the chambers. If that were the case with me, the cardio-version would release the clots and kill me. So they needed to knock me out, stick a scope down my throat, examine the heart, THEN do the cardioversion - which is a little like prolonged defibrillation to get my heart beating normally again... but they couldn't get the people. So they were making arrangements to keep me overnight and do all this the following day when, in the evening, my heartbeat recovered.

Big relief. They put me up anyway just to be sure the A-Fib was really gone.

I got stuck by nurses, technicians and, I'm pretty sure, a janitor, about twenty times. Some of them were inept. The one at 5 a.m. tried four times, then gave up and sent up a phlebotomist who nailed it on the first try.

Docs say my heart is in pretty good condition except for the one valve. It, they said, is one of the narrowest they have seen in quite some time. They proposed surgery in two weeks. I countered, asking if I could have it in mid-December instead, and they okayed that. The doc told me that the odds of three additional weeks hurting me (aka "death") is roughly .05 percent. In other words, five percent of one percent. Very, very slight.

I've got a good surgeon lined up. He's the head of cardiology for Dartmouth.

Hello, all.

De is doing fine. He had a minor complication during his angiogram, and is awaiting more tests in the morning. I will leave it to him to share more, assuming I am able to bring him home from the hospital tomorrow. His laptop, unfortunately, is still in my car.
