It was either Sioux Falls or Bismarck, I forget, where I drove to the airport at 11 p.m. one night just to see if a major shipment I was expecting had come in. I went into the cargo building and found NOBODY there. There was a telephone with a sign that said to use it for assistance, so I picked it up and someone on the other end answered. "Where are you?" this person asked. I told her that I was in the cargo building, which was unlocked, and nobody was there. "Oh, sorry, but we're closed," they said. "Come back in the morning." Which I did.

The thing is, they weren't in the least concerned that I was in the building. There were computers, desks, file cabinets, calculators... ALL sorts of things in that building, and they weren't worried in the least. I loved that. I could hardly believe that there was still a place in America with so little crime that businesses didn't feel any need to lock up.

...WWII my dad went thru some of his air force training at Sioux Falls S Dakota. Said it was the coldest place he ever saw in his entire life.
