I've got a huge pile of compost in my back yard. It's made up mostly of leaves gathered last year. The compost didn't fully break down - too little grass, and not turned frequently enough, would be my guess.

Compost is supposed to be wet, but not TOO wet, so I keep it covered most of the time, uncovering it only when a short rainstorm is coming or when I have something I want to add to it. Wednesday, I uncovered it to add the lobster carapace and to catch some rain. I covered it up again yesterday.

When I went out there today, I found that something had ripped a large, yard-wide hole through the middle of the tarp and scooped out a bunch of compost. I pulled the tarp off and found that chunks of the lobster (which had been buried) had mysteriously surfaced. Huh. Raccoon, maybe. Or . . . bear? There aren't any tracks so I can't tell. I'd guess that a bear would have made an even bigger mess.

Dammit. It was a $30 tarp.
