Re: "Their sales are not strong and never have been."
I think they do very well at Christmastime - for the simple fact that shoppers can find things there that they won't find anywhere else. You are right, though, that most of it is 3rd world crap.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

I had a Pier 1 store near to my home some years ago.

Funny thing. HArdly ANYONE was shopping there at any time my wife and I out of curiosity would stop and look around to see if they actually had anything we would be interested in.
They never did. A lot of JUNK from third world crapholes.

It closed its doors a couple years after it opened.

Thisis what happens to brick and mortar retailers who have to pay either rent or mortgages on a building, pay for the insurance on that building, and property taxes to the local government, and business insurance and fire insurance, and then payroll taxess, State Business taxes, local taxes, payroll taxes, etc, etc.....

And the stuff they are trying to sell is HIGH Priced and appealing to not very many people.....

SO, is it any wonder to anyone else why these stand alone stores of Pier 1 are not making enough money to pay the monthly rent or mortgage payments ????

Their sales are not strong and never have been. Ithas finally caught up with them and others as well.

Retailing is at best a very high risk business.... Very few ever succeed. A LOW percentage. I am surprised Pier 1's doors are even still open.

Maybe shortly they won't be......
No surpises here..
