Beldin responded before I could, but as an instructor, I heartily agree with every one of them.

My go to concealed carry is a .45 (a semi-auto) and my home defense gun is a .357 (a revolver). The drawback to revolvers tends to be the heavy trigger. I have had a fair number of women who were unable to squeeze it. The semi-auto has its drawbacks, too - more likely to jam (99% of the time an easy fix, though).

As for caliber, I tell students that the best defensive caliber is the largest one you are comfortable shooting regularly for practice and can actually hit a target with. Don't get a .45 if you're afraid to use it. If the best you can handle is a .22, then get really, REALLY accurate with it. No thug wants more holes, and .22s can leave nasty damage.

That said, 9mm is an excellent choice. Especially for home defense, I tend to recommend a heavier gun over a light one, simply because you will feel less recoil because the weight of the gun itself will counter some of it. Same for barrel length - if you don't need to conceal it, get a long barrel. My .357 has a 4" barrel.

I had a student who had never even held a gun before. Her son had gifted her the class and a brand new Smith & Wesson CT642 for Christmas. First of all, she pulls out a box of .357 to shoot. I gently correct her, and suggest we start with .38 (a lighter load that is acceptable for that gun). After 5 shots, she had hit our target at 3 yards twice, and was hyperventilating and crying. She was terrified by it.

I suggested she attempt another round of 5 with my revolver, a Ruger SP101. After some coaxing, she agreed. With that one, she put all 5 rounds right in the bullseye.

The difference? The CT642 is designed for concealed carry, and is therefore very light - total unloaded weight of 15 ounces. The Ruger? A full 10 ounces more. The near doubling of the weight controlled the kick enough for her to not be afraid of it.

A good instructor (as well as a good sales person at a reputable gun shop or range) will go over these things with you to help you make a choice.

* How will you be using the pistol? By that, I mean ... will it remain in your house for home defense purposes or will you be carrying it around with you when you are out and about?
-------------

TO START WITH, I WANT TO HAVE A GUN IN THE HOUSE.
I INTEND TO GET A CONCEALED CARRY LICENSE, BUT I MIGHT BE DEAD BY THE TIME I DO THAT.

I KNOW YOU'LL BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU THAT I HAVE NEVER HAD MY FINGERPRINTS TAKEN. NEVER. I COULD KILL SOMEBODY FOR YOU, AND LEAVE MY PRINTS ALL OVER THE PLACE, AND THEY WOULD NEVER KNOW WHO DID IT.
------

* How experienced are you with handling handguns? BELOW ZERO.

Are you comfortable when shooting them or not? I AM AFRAID OF THEM. Your comment about hives might be a clear indication as to the latter. YES.
-------------

* How big are your hands? THEY ARE JUST PERFECT, THANKS FOR ASKING! (I am far from normal, but I believe my hands are a normal size. I have good tits, though - ohgod, why do I say these things?)

---------------

If you get a good instructor, he should be able to get you trained ... no, not potty training - that's a lost cause HEY, WHEN I HAVE TO TINKLE, MAN, I GOTTA GO (smartass)

... handling the pistol safely, comfortable in how to load and operate the pistol, firing the pistol accurately at short range, properly maintaining the weapon ... in a relatively short period of time - if you are truly interested and apply yourself. I AM TRULY INTERESTED AND I KNOW HOW TO APPLY MYSELF. I HAVE TO LEARN. SOMEBODY WAS BANGING ON MY DOOR AT 3:30 A.M. TWO WEEKS AGO, TUESDAY. NO SHID.

Most men have experience with firearms already ... and have already developed bad habits ... so, men are more difficult to train because you have to break their bad habits, first.

Most women are blank slates when it comes to firearms and can start out the right way with a good instructor. Oh, then it should be easy for me. I don't think anyone is as BLANK as I am.
------------

I know plenty of women who fire .45s just fine, so if concealability and portability are not a major concern, then I'd say you should at least try a small to medium frame 9mm. 9s really don't kick that much more than .380s and they pack a much better punch.

I am taking notes so I can show my instructor. The thing is you have to drive to the shooting range where the instructors help you. I HAVE TO DRIVE THERE, DID YOU HEAR THAT?

OMG, I am in deep doo-doo.

THANK YOU, BELDIN. I APPRECIATE THE TIME YOU TOOK TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING TO ME.

I am much better at other things. Smile)))
