Re: "Now . . Are fewer people going to the theatre because 'there are more entertainment choices' . . . Or are people

Good question. I stopped going many years ago when prices jumped and I decided it was a ridiculous waste of money. Oddly enough, now that I've got a local $5 movie theatre, I've begun to go again. (I saw 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' last week. I was disapointed. But I saw 'Yesterday' a week before that and really enjoyed it.)

However, there's validity in the argument that movies have lost something. Namely, they've seemingly all become *flash* and special effects. Plot has been sacrificed. What's the last truly wonderful book that was made into a movie? The Hobbit? It's been a while. For that matter, I'm not sure that novels are doing as well as they once did either. I don't think people are reading like they used to. (I could be wrong. I know a gal who was going through 2 or 3 fantasy novels per week and probably still does.) I can tell you for certain that my preferred literature genre, science fiction, has nearly died out. (No, 'The Avengers' and Spider-man don't qualify as science fiction. And they were originally comic books, not novels.)

So, special effects might STILL be the big thing in movies, but imo you outgrow them after a while. Once you achieve that realization, why pay to see them? If you wait a while, they'll probably show up on Netflix or in your local Redbox at a small fraction of the price.

BTW, the going rate around here for DVDs at yard sales is $1. I sometimes buy movies for 50¢. When that's commonplace, why shell out $10 or $15 (PER PERSON) to see a new movie in a theatre?

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

2017’s Movie Ticket Sales Were the Lowest in 25 Years

https://www.slashfilm.com/2017-movie-ticket-sales/

We’re still basking in the rejuvenating cleanse of the new year and looking forward to the future, but folks who work for major movie theater chains have to contend with a statistic today that’s so sobering that it may shock that refreshing new year feeling right out of them. According to Box Office Mojo, movie ticket sales in 2017 were the lowest they’ve been since 1992. That means theaters sold fewer tickets last year than in the past 25 years – clearly a troubling trend for exhibitors. Will the films of 2018 continue that trend, or provide a much-needed uptick in sales?
