Dorian's sustained winds are 180mph in the most recent report, and the storm is moving slowly. Sitting through it would be like being hit by a tornado that doesn't leave for 12 hours. Some of the islands near Grand Bahama are experiencing that. They may not have a building left by tonight.

Category 5 begins at 157 mph, so this is about as bad as Atlantic hurricanes get. Fortunately, it will probably weaken as it approaches the mainland, with winds around 140 mph when the storm begins its northern turn. The difference in impact between 140 and 180 mph wind is enormous. You might be able to stand in 140 (until something hits you). 180 mph wind will carry you away.

There's still a chance in three that the models will be wrong and Florida will be hit. Even if they're right, the state will probably have a ton of water damage. (But note that, as shown in the diagram below, the cone of uncertainty is such that the storm could also turn north soon and cause no damage to the U.S. at all.)

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
