As we mentioned above, MSNBC primetime host Lawrence O'Donnell was forced to issue a retraction on Wednesday night after running with an unsubstantiated report the night before that alleged Russian oligarchs co-signed Donald Trump's loans from Deutsche Bank.
Following intense backlash over the initial report — which was based on a single source who had not seen the bank records — and threat of a defamation lawsuit from President Trump's legal team, O'Donnell took to Twitter to apologize. His on-air retraction expanded on that mea culpa.
"I did not go through the rigorous verification and standards process here at MSNBC before repeating what I heard from my source," he acknowledged. "Had it gone through that process I would not have been permitted to report it. I should not have said it on air or posted it on Twitter. I was wrong to do so ... I apologize."
Never one to miss an opportunity to take a jab, President Trump lashed out — in a ... creative way. The commander-in-chief aired his past history with O'Donnell and recounted a prior situation in which the cable news host had to apologize for statements he made about Trump and The Apprentice — claiming that O'Donnell did so while crying despite footage showing otherwise.
