From the bottom to the top they were called The Mainsail, The Topsail The Gallant and the Top Gallant. Each one of these sails had a spar (ran crossways to the mast. The highest point you could stand on any ship was the Top Gallant Spar and that is where they put the "crows nest" for the lookout. I told ya that so's I could give ya a limerick that would make sense.
