Decomposed,
I want to apologize for using the word 'ignorant' and have changed it in the initial post. I agree there are depressing stats out there yet "A person who doesn't marginalize will be driven right out of his mind" and in doing so becomes mentally numb to the massive numbers of everything - good and bad.

Having B+ blood I try to look for the positives in everything and sometimes to my overly optimistic detriment. I guess to an extent we are all, as you said, "functional slaves" are we not? After all, we all work (or worked) and traded part of that '100 very short years' for linen paper with serial numbers.

PEACE

Re: "all I can say is that marginalizing 40+ MILLION people is a grossly ignorant thing to state - especially IF you are one of the 40,000,000++!!!"
True, even if the number is ONE.

Based on the typology of modern slavery from your link, shown below, I'm surprised that the estimate is only 40 million... or 30 million... or whatever it actually is. North Korea alone has 26 million people. How could anyone who has read about conditions in that hellhole conclude that it is anything but a nation of slaves?

Nine million more in Africa ... and I think that accounts for the bulk of the slaves.

Some depressing stats: Nearly a billion people in the world have no electricity. 300 to 600 million people contract malaria annually. 775 million people are illiterate. There are 210 million orphans. 895 million people are starving. Two billion drink water contaminated with feces. More than three billion survive on less than $2.50 per day. The $2.20 subsidy earned daily by cows in the EU exceeds the daily earnings of the world's poorest 1.2 billion people. And we all die in under 100 very short years.

So, am I marginalizing these numbers... especially the smaller ones like "only 40 million functional slaves"? You bet. Right along with the bigger numbers, and I bet you do too. Numbers like that, and the pain they represent, are too much to grasp. A person who doesn't marginalize will be driven right out of his mind.
