Re: "all I can say is that marginalizing 40+ MILLION people is a grossly ignorant thing to state - especially IF you are one of the 40,000,000++!!!"
True, even if the number is ONE.

Based on the typology of modern slavery from your link, shown below, I'm surprised that the estimate is only 40 million... or 30 million... or whatever it actually is. North Korea alone has 26 million people. How could anyone who has read about conditions in that hellhole conclude that it is anything but a nation of slaves?

Nine million more in Africa ... and I think that accounts for the bulk of the slaves.

Some depressing stats: Nearly a billion people in the world have no electricity. 300 to 600 million people contract malaria annually. 775 million people are illiterate. There are 210 million orphans. 895 million people are starving. Two billion drink water contaminated with feces. More than three billion survive on less than $2.50 per day. The $2.20 subsidy earned daily by cows in the EU exceeds the daily earnings of the world's poorest 1.2 billion people. And we all die in under 100 very short years.

So, am I marginalizing these numbers... especially the smaller ones like "only 40 million functional slaves"? You bet. Right along with the bigger numbers, and I bet you do too. Numbers like that, and the pain they represent, are too much to grasp. A person who doesn't marginalize will be driven right out of his mind.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Decomposed - I put TWO LINKS in my post - the WaPo link was a 'quickie' and insignificant in comparison to the FIRST LINK.

I did not mean to jump in to your conversation with Micro yet when anyone states that 40+Million people in SLAVERY "works out to about one half of one percent of the world's population... and that's well within the margin of error of most statistical samplings. In other words, the number could possibly be 2.5 percent or it could be zero. So, I question the number." all I can say is that marginalizing 40+ MILLION people is a grossly EDIT: misinformed thing to state - especially IF you are one of the 40,000,000++!!!

Here is the link again to the interactive map of Global Slavery I posted that you missed - very enlightening.

This link is to the 2018 Global Slavery Index from the Walk Free Foundation - the file is almost 59MB and 276 pages and should eliminate ANY AND ALL doubt that slavery is rampant and was not eradicated as you seem to think it was 100+ years ago. It is a comprehensive file that you will enjoy.
