Re: "...because evil does not stop on it's own."That's a good mantra, but facts don't bear it out. Slavery ended in dozens of countries after our civil war... and apartheid ended in South Africa. There was usually some nudging, but never war. It ended mostly on its own. By the late 19th century, slavery was no longer practical.

Did you know that the British Empire still allowed slaves in its protectorates in the 20th century? But it ended. Without violence.

No other country in the world had to rip itself asunder in order to end slavery. Only we did. But, then, we didn't rip ourselves apart for that reason. We ripped ourselves apart because we had a Commander-In-Chief who decided to deny some states one of their rights.

Earlier, micro asked why anyone would ever get rid of free labor if they weren't forced to. I'll respond with a question of my own: Do you see many farmers today who still plow their fields with oxen? It seems that farmers got rid of their free labor when something better came along. That's how it works.

Technology played a huge role in ending slavery around the world. Tractors are a heck of a lot more effective and lower maintenance than a bunch of whining, uneducated, unpredictable and sometimes sickly slaves. So, as technology advanced, the need and desire for slaves went away. All over the world.

And, yes, it would have happened in the United States. Our cultural advances never lagged Europe's by all that much.

Why not? Slavery was ending EVERYWHERE and was practically eradicated worldwide by 1905.
