Why not? Slavery was ending EVERYWHERE and was practically eradicated worldwide by 1905.

And although revisionist history claims that the war was BECAUSE of slavery, that's not true. Slavery was ended as a strategy to win the war. That's why Lincoln didn't issue the Emancipation Proclamation up front. He waited over two years. At the start of the war, Lincoln was not planning on eliminating slavery. In fact, many believe (for good reason) that the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't meant to apply to slaves in the North.
