Captain

I know you are jes yankin my chain and I too am pretty good at putt putt as I am a very good putter on real golf greens.

Once upon a time in my younger days I said similar things about hiting a golf ball. This from a guy who has varsity letters in Baseball, basetball, Track, and football in Ohio LARGE school athletics. Two State titles in Football and 2nd team all state in football. Yes, I was an athlete. A natural athlete. Been that way all my life from boyhood through teen years and after.

I played mens world class softball for 20 plus years after enjoying a small vacation in a southeast asian country and was grateful to not come back in a body bag.

One day our engineering group at work was having a farewell outing for my co-engineer who was leaving for California. We had a golf outing. I had never hit a golf ball on a real golf course in my life. I thought it was silly and sissified.

One of the older men got me some clubs to borrow for the outing and took me to apractive range tot each me how to hit a golf ball and jhave it go where you are aiming.

I discovered then that just trying to hit the ball witha driver off a tee was not easy. Hitting a ball off the fairway with an iron in your hand, the ball on the ground, and you trying to hit it with this club was also not easy. Then as a year progressed I had hit it right aout three times. It felt good. I wanted to do it again.

So I kept practicing and developed a swing I was cnsistent at. Never had a lesson from a pro. I should have. But I watched video instruction and bought Jack's Book on lessons that was illustrated.

In short, playing a round of golf is not easy. It TORQUES your lower back and spine if you swing properly.

It also is not easy to be balanced while delivering the clubhead at 114 MPH to a ball laying on ground with you about three feet from it and a 35 inch length club you are swinging from a standing position with BALANCE.

There is nothing like striking a ball in perfct balance on the sweet spot of the clubface and feeling and hearing it. The ball launches at a perfec trajectory and is going where you INTENDED it to go and AT THE RIGHT DISTANCE so you don't fly the green and land in water or woods or come up short and land in a trap or a lake.

It is a real game which is physically taxing. But it alsois very gratifying because when you play well, you want to do it again. It is a level of accomplishment few attain.

I am about a 12 handicap golfer which means I shoot aout 12 over par on 18 holes. Some days I do better. SOme days I do worse. Over 90 percent of all people who play golf never even do better than 20 over par for a round. They don;t even break 100 strokes.

So I feel pretty good about my game and the work I put in to get it to that point. I did shoot one round of PAR golf on a decent golf course. Par was 71 and I shot 71 with witnesses who attested and signed the scorecard.

I was in a zone that day.

I will miss this game of relaxation, the jokes being told for four hours, and the ability to have fun and not embarass myself in front of others.

It really is a game that if you do not develop a lot of arthriis in your lower spine, can last a lifetime and is enjoyable..
