What you experienced is what destroyed two of my canopies. The water weight in a major downpour collects in sags of the fabric which then sag worse, and that allows more water to accumulate, and it quickly gets to where the canopy has a couple of hundred pounds of weight sitting on it. Eventually, the structure gives.
