As Lockheed Martin readies production of the F-16 at its new home in Greenville, unexpectedly high demand for the fighter jet has officials saying up to 400 people will be hired for the work.
This is double the workforce the company estimated it would need less than a year ago.
The latest version of the Cold War-era plane — bound for the Kingdom of Bahrain — should come off the Greenville line by December 2021. A combination of White House support for arms sales and pent-up demand for the classic fighter jet, whose production was idled in 2017, has more customers lining up, officials said Tuesday.
"We see over the next few years, assuming all these orders and additional ones, not all of which I can talk about, it will be up to 400 new jobs in Greenville to support F-16 production," said John Losinger, a spokesman for the Bethesda, Maryland-based defense contractor.
