McKinney’s Furniture will close its stores in Canton and Alliance, and refocus its business on the Pittsburgh market.
McKinney’s Furniture is closing its Stark County locations and will focus on expanding in the Pittsburgh market.
The family-owned chain, based in Calcutta near East Liverpool, has operated stores at 1001 30th St NE in Plain Township and 2441 W. State St. in Alliance.
Several factors, including slow sales, played into the company’s decision to close the Stark County locations, Greg McKinney said.
Plans to widen U.S. Route 62 are behind the decision to close the 30th Street NE location. McKinney said he expects the Ohio Department of Transportation will want some of the property to accommodate the project. The store sits at the intersection where a ramp from westbound Route 62 meets 30th Street and Martindale Road NE.
Meanwhile, McKinney said the company has a potential buyer for its building in Alliance and decided to sell. The Canton property also will be offered for sale.
The chain has operated in Alliance since the early 1980s. It expanded to Canton in 1998 with the purchase of the former Hallmark Furniture store, which used the 30th Street NE location.
A date hasn’t been set for the closing. McKinney expects the stores will remain open at least 90 days, possibly longer. The company has hired a firm to help it liquidate its remaining stock.
Once the Stark County stores are closed, the company will continue to operate in Calcutta, Salem and Monaca, Pa. McKinney said the retail chain, which opened in 1955, hopes to expand in Pittsburgh and Weirton, W.Va.
“We’re focusing on new markets,” McKinney said.

Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.
