You do not want to purchase garlic now as it is from last years crop and you are correct - now is too late to plant unless your goal is green garlic - which is like a spring onion. So my suggestion is to visit your local farmers market - do a little research on the vendors - one will be selling garlic sometime before fall. YES - garlic is very resilient and is grown in Canada so snow will not harm it (you will most likely need to mulch your patch) and it is roughly a 9 month crop. Plant late Oct-Nov and harvest in June/July. There is a reason the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans - as well as every culture in history - have placed a high value on garlic. And when you buy your local seed stock it will already be acclimated for your climate. Price is not the issue as one pound will create 5X+ the next year. When I started growing my French Grey Griselle shallots 7 years ago I started with 12 small bulbs. 12 that were the size of your top pinky knuckle. I replanted and replanted and last year I had 45#'s - most I ate and some I traded to local restaurants for $25 per pound in gift certificates. Worked for me as they have an incomparable flavor and are the best flavored - there is a reason French chefs snap them up each fall when they hit local markets. I will be harvesting my Turban garlic - called Thai Fire - later this afternoon and I will post a photo. I think hardneck garlic will be a great addition to your crops. Now is the time for a soil test - most AG centers offer it for free during specific times. Get the soil tested so you know what if any amendments are needed as soil preparation is the KEY to growing good garlic as it is a root crop. I apply worm casting tea as a foliar spray several times in Feb-early May and that helps the plants with their available nutrient uptake = healthier plants!!! Here is a link to a decent 'garlic knowledge" starter kit:

Re: "Prepare your soil now with composted manure on a slight slope for good drainage in full sun and in late October you will be ready to plant."
Thanks for the suggestion!! I think I know just the spot.

There is a discount store in my area that has deals on various things at different times of the year. I go there pretty often just to see what they have "THIS week." So, a couple of weeks ago I bought a whole bunch of plant bulbs and roots: Onions, Potatoes, Strawberries,"Astilbe Chocolate Kiss" flowers, Dahlias ("Dazzling Dreams" blend and also "A Little Romance" blend), and Lilies, all for $4 a bag. I picked up some of almost everything . . . except some flowers and the garlic. The reason I skipped on the garlic was that I figured it was probably too late to plant them this year in order to get a crop - and will they survive the winter? I know the potatoes won't, but then I'll be digging them up in the fall. Garlic, though... hm. I may have to go back and get them if they're still available.

Meanwhile, I need to go plant all this stuff. Today, until 6 p.m. when it's supposed to rain, is perfect...
