CNN's Anderson Cooper moderated a wide-ranging town hall event Thursday evening with James Comey, during which the former FBI director made news on topics including the ongoing controversy surrounding Peter Strzok and Lisa Page and his personal thoughts on some of the Justice Department top brass.
Comey fielded a question from the audience about whether Strzok and Page should have faced disciplinary actions and was subsequently asked by Cooper whether he would acknowledge the episode "damaged" the FBI's reputation and "tarnished" the Russia investigation.
The former FBI chief also didn't hesitate to go after newly-retired Rod Rosenstein, suggesting the former deputy attorney general was not a man of strong character after Rosenstein praised President Donald Trump for "respecting the rule of law" during a farewell ceremony.
Trump predictably lashed out against Comey, calling him a "disgrace" and declaring he will "go down as the worst Director in its long and once proud history."
The town hall was Comey's second media appearance of the week, following an appearance on CBS This Morning where he pushed back against Attorney General William Barr's use of the term "spying" to describe the surveillance that occurred of the Trump campaign. He also penned an op-ed last week going after the AG.
Republicans on the Hill including Senator John Kennedy see the uptick in media appearances by the former FBI director as a way to hedge against what the DOJ inspector general may reveal in his upcoming report of potential abuses in the department.
"I think Mr. Comey is lashing out now because he knows what’s coming." Kennedy told Fox News' Bill Hemmer on Wednesday.
