Hi De.

I read a news story a fw months ago where someone around an airport was using an Laser pointer and beaming it at the cockpit of incoming passenger jets and the cops went looking for the perp. The reason was that it does indeed affect the vision of the pilots if they get a laser light beam in their face or eyes.

This was my concern. I agree with you and Zim about the other uses lasers are used for. No worries .

Lasers are not toys. They are used in etching, in distance projection, in signaling, in CDs and DVDs, in printers, in surgeries and in countless other ways. Banning them would be simply absurd.

Laser pointers are not powerful enough to affect vision more than about 50 feet away. They can really only HURT you if you stick them against your eye and look inside. Believe me, if it were otherwise, we would be inundated with blind elementary school kids right now. That's not to say that no one ever damages their eyes with laser pointers... they can and do. But only by doing something extraordinarily stupid at very close range.

The lasers you are thinking of are far more powerful... perhaps what you'd find in a printer. But even there, they'll never down an aircraft.

As for drones, I'll just say that BIRDS are a vastly greater threat. However, the drone threat is real. I expect runways will be signal jammed in the very near future if they aren't already so that drones cannot approach closer than a half mile. Then drones, too, will be a nonexistent threat to planes. No need to impinge upon American freedoms.
