Re: "Are you sure the network card in the laptop simply did not have it's driver munged? "
It's been fixed already, and that's exactly what the problem turned out to be. I could've used your advice yesterday, before I put all that work in!

This laptop is about 3½ years old. I bought it on Black Friday 2015 because my old laptop was starting to have problems. However, I boxed it up immediately since I was in no hurry to use Windows 10, then unpacked it in Oct 2018 when the old one finally gave up the ghost. (For those of you who enjoy learning from others' mistakes, storing a brand new laptop for nearly 3 years was a BAD idea. The laptop's lithium battery died due to disuse. Moreover, this particular laptop will not function even on AC power if it doesn't have a charged battery, so the battery problem meant that my computer didn't work when I finally needed it. I had to order a replacement battery and hope that that was the problem. Fortunately, by late 2018 the battery's price had fallen substantially. I found one on Amazon for a little over twenty bucks.)

Because of all that, this laptop is only 6 months old as far as I'm concerned. It's too new to be put in the trash, but Microsoft was doing its best make that happen anyway. I wonder how many others are buying new laptops right now because of Microsoft??
