The guy had already tried to get a key through his dealer, himself - the retail price was over $1,000.
They usually say the keys are very expensive because they have chips in them. I would be surprised if the chips cost the auto makers (or dealers) $0.50 for each key. They do need to be programmed but a $10 programmer would program all the keys they want.
Nobody talks down the price of electronics like the auto makers.
