Let me ask a question of the board: How many others do you know who are actively working toward surviving or resisting economic collapse? Anarchy? Whole scale rebellion/war? Totalitarianism? I only know two, both of whom bought acreage and are working toward off-the-grid independence. Your responses, I think, will give us the answer to the author's question. Middle-classers who, even now, are still taking a wait-and-see approach to what's coming will never do anything to defend themselves.

Re: "How much longer will the middle class politely tolerate its own destruction?"
That was an excellent, profound, thought-provoking essay, one of the best I've read in quite a while. As I read, I found myself ticking off many of the items in a mental checkbox that makes me who I am.

It wasn't until I neared the article's conclusion that I finally found some things with which I disagree. For instance, the author asks if the people charged with 'pushing the buttons' for a full-scale war against their own people will, in fact, be willing to do so. He suggests that they may not, while I have no doubt that they will. There are no limits to what hatred and contempt will motivate those with power to do - all the while assuring themselves that they are not hateful and are simply doing what they must.

The introductory question was a good one. How much longer will the Middle-class put up with this? While I can look at myself and say that I have already stopped tolerating it by virtue of having dropped out of the workforce a couple of decades earlier than I otherwise might have, I have no illusions that many other middle-classers are doing the same. For one thing, I think I see the future better than most. I began preparing for some kind of socioeconomic collapse almost 20 years ago - and it really does take that long to prepare; most in the middle class laughed at the idea back then. Many consider it a possibility today but, through their inaction, they clearly still think it will be averted. For another, I have a tendency to take principled stands against governmental edicts that I despise even when it is possible to shrug them off; most people do not.

The problem is that people who are comfortable do not tend to fight. Apply that to this topic and it means that by the time most middle-classers become uncomfortable, they will no longer be middle class.
