Re: "I'd like you to chime in, if you so choose."
I'm not sure what a "massive dollar run" is. The U.S. is not a bank. The article did not clarify the headline, but then we didn't see the entire article. Unfortunately, I don't get Gary Shilling's newsletter. Do you? Without reading his article, it's tough to know what he's predicting. I'm guessing, though, that he thinks the rest of the world is going to want more and more dollars. If they do, our government will be happy to provide them.

Is that good or bad for the U.S.? Well, it's both. In the short term, it's good for the American population and bad for American business. We'll be able to buy foreign products cheap, but we'll have a harder time selling our own. If we want to take vacations abroad, everything will be cheap. Foreigners won't be able to afford to vacation here. American businesses have a harder time competing when the dollar is strong. For them, a strong dollar sucks.

Other things being equal, I'd rather have a strong dollar than a weak one. But as foreign holdings of dollars increase, the risk of currency war mounts. What is China going to do with the trillions of dollars it has stored away? Unload them at some point, presumably. The author doesn't think that's going to happen. I think it's inevitable. China *is* lightening its holdings of dollars, btw. But not so dramatically as to constitute a 'war.'

So there's my two cents.

As you know, I anticipate an economic collapse. I don't think this is it. I think this is a Federal-Reserve initiated economic downturn. It's going to be painful, but it won't necessarily last too long. I wonder if the Fed will be decent enough to reverse their rate increases, or if they'll keep them where they are in a not-very-subtle attempt to undermine the President...
