Stacked firewood under cover will last for many years DFE............And yes you will need to build a shed for it. Only way to go...............

Re: "If SHTF I will find a way LOL."
I just told my wife that we should maintain six cords of firewood. In TEOTWAWKI, fuel for cutting firewood may be unavailable. Therefore we should have extra wood at all times. How long does firewood keep? I'm not sure. Hopefully four or five years at least if it's dry and off the ground.

As I've now learned, we need about a cord and a half to get us through the worst of winter. (But we used oil in November and December. It doesn't usually snow much or get as cold in that stretch) Of course, that's THIS winter. Some years will be different. Six cords means we would have a 3 year supply on hand at all times. That should hold us over in a worst case scenario.

I've also learned that tarps are not a good way to keep wood dry. Oh, they work but autumn winds turned our tarps into sails and ripped our stakes from the ground. That led to some excitement in November and December. Later, the wind ceased to be an issue. The frozen ground cemented the stakes in place and snow on the tarps and against the sides kept the tarps down even in stronger storms. HOWEVER, there is a problem with our tarps abrading as a result of incessant rubbing against the wood. They're developing holes after just one season, and those things aren't cheap.

So I need to build a woodshed that's at least big enough to hold six cords. It'll need to be accessible on all sides so that on different years I can retrieve wood from different directions... effectively letting me rotate the supply without having to re-stack. I think I'll just build a frame with a roof, then loosely screw plywood around the sides to give it stability, leaving sizeable gaps for light and ventilation. Each year, I'll re-stock and close the side I last used and open up another the following winter.
