During the House oversight committee hearing of testimony from long-time Trump fixer, confidante, and personal attorney Michael Cohen on Wednesday, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) addressed the issue of whether the president is racist.
In his opening testimony, Cohen stated flatly that Donald Trump is a racist.
“I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is,” Cohen said in his statement. “He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat.”
Rep. Meadows visited that point in his questions for Cohen during the hearing. To do so, he brought in Housing and Urban Development official Lynne Patton, whom he had stand behind him on display.

Meadows referenced Patton, behind him, and asked if Cohen knows her, which he does.
“How long have you known Ms. Patton?” he asked.
“I’m responsible for Ms. Patton joining the Trump organization in the job that she currently holds.”
“I’m glad you acknowledge that because you made some very demeaning comments about the president that Ms. Patton doesn’t agree with,” said Meadows. “In fact, it has to do with your claim of racism. She says that as a daughter of a man born in Birmingham, Alabama, that there is no way that she would work for an individual who was racist.”
“How do you reconcile the two of those,” he asked.
Cohen replied that he shouldn’t work for a racist either as “a son of a Holocaust survivor”, and Meadows rephrased, citing his many non-racist conversations with Trump.
“But, Mr. Cohen, I guess what I’m saying is, is I’ve talked to the president over 300 times. I’ve not heard one time a racist comment out of his mouth in private,” he said. “So how do you reconcile it?”
Meadows asked if Cohen had any proof or recordings and they went back and forth about how many times Cohen had surreptitiously recorded conversations over the years. Meadows again asked for proof.
“Ask Ms. Patton how many people who are black are executives at the Trump organization. The answer is zero,” said Cohen.
“Mr. Cohen we could go through this–” Meadows began.
“You asked me–” Cohen interrupted to reply. Then Meadows interrupted to ask that Lynne Patton’s entire statement be entered into the record, to which the chair offered no objection.
