Making the average person reevaluate their position on hate crimes is a good thing. The whole idea of hate crimes - suggesting that there are crimes of violence that don't involve hate - is ridiculous. Besides, does the motivation for a crime make it any less or more serious? It shouldn't.
-----------------
The problem here is that people, who never harbored any anger or hate towards another race, are now doing just that. So their reevaluation is backfiring.
Hate crimes are ridiculous, but any crime is.
Some people are murdered and not because of hate. Sometimes it is "relationship" torment, or for money, greed or personal goods, such as jewelry or their car.
NO, THE MOTIVATION FOR A CRIME doesn't matter to me at all.
BUT, the crime alone (for whatever reason) goes straight to my soul.
Why is a cop with 3 young children killed?
Ask the killer - he won't know why.
If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.
