Why not report these rape claims when Justin Fairfax was Lt. Governor - already a VERY prominent position? Instead, his victims waited until after the Northam scandal broke and Fairfax was on the cusp of attaining governorship. That's suspicious.

I think the explanation is one of two things: Either Northam actually thinks this "distraction" will save him and leaked the story himself, or *somebody* wants Fairfax gone and replaced by someone safe before Northam and Atty General Mark Herring (who committed the same offense) are forced out. (BTW, at least one site is claiming that the mysterious KKK person in Northam's yearbook photo is actually Northam's girlfriend at the time - now his wife. Isn't THAT special?) Democrats don't want to turn the state over to Republicans, so I imagine they are desperate to get a scandal-free Lt. Governor in place before Northam resigns.

Northam, of course, says that he won't resign. I think he will, though, because nobody is going to want to be associated with him from now on. The pressure to resign will be unrelenting. It's just a matter of time. So Fairfax has to go NOW.

Amid a widening scandal in Virginia state government, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax was accused Friday by a former Duke University student of a sexual assault in 2000.

Below are the statements by both the attorney for the accuser, Meredith Watson, and Fairfax himself.

Nancy Erika Smith, attorney for Watson:

We serve as counsel for Meredith Watson, who was raped by Justin Fairfax in 2000, while they were both students at Duke University. Mr. Fairfax's attack was premeditated and aggressive. The two were friends but never dated or had any romantic relationship.

Ms. Watson shared her account of the rape with friends in a series of emails and Facebook messages that are now in our possession. Additionally, we have statements from former classmates corroborating that Ms. Watson immediately told friends that Mr. Fairfax had raped her.

Ms. Watson was upset to learn that Mr. Fairfax raped at least one other woman after he attacked her. The details of Ms. Watson's attack are similar to those described by Dr. Vanessa Tyson.
