...I hear the guy who owns amazon has to give his wife 74 billion in their divorce. Trust me, you didn't hurt him.

Since my son is back with us for three months, we rushed to buy him a bed. In the past he'd slept on our futon, but we all agree he now needs a bed in his own room. (We just got rid of a nice bedroom set in Virginia. The side effects of moving go on and on.)

My wife found a real wood bed that was perfect for the small bedroom - a Captain's Bed (a twin built on a chest of drawers). We ordered a 'Medium' memory foam mattress from Amazon. It was $170 - which seemed pretty steep to me, but at least it came with a guarantee.

As it turned out, we needed the guarantee. My son tried the mattress for several days and then complained that it was too hard. Okay...

We called Amazon to schedule a return. We also ordered a mattress bag from Amazon. ($8 ) We bagged the mattress up, hauled it downstairs and . . . this evening called Amazon to ask why they hadn't picked it up. "Oh, we cancelled the pickup," they said. "Do whatever you want with the mattress. Your money has been refunded in full."

Uhhhh. Okay. Like I said: Something good happened but I feel a little guilt.
