My wife and I are physically pretty average. Despite that, we've loaded and unloaded several houses and apartments over the years, doing them mostly by ourselves. The two of us couldn't do the the piano, the refrigerator or the armoire, but everything else including hide-a-beds and a cheap pool table was feasible. Sometimes, like in the 2017 apartment and in our current house, we had to get heavy items up full flights of stairs.

You're right that straps aren't going to help when things are just too heavy. But if the object is just big and bulky and would otherwise involve us being stooped over, trying to grip sharp edges while dealing with stairs, then straps make a world of difference. It's nice to not struggle to get your fingers under something and then have to lift with the back. It's nice to not need a handhold when one might not exist. And on stairs, it's nice having the luxury to make straps short or long so that neither person has to hunch over and go up the stairs backwards. Been there, done that. I'm sure we all have. And that's how you get hurt.

I once saw two dudes bring in a refrigerator with those strap type thingies.
Except that there's did not go on the wrists. They went over the shoulders.

And I am pretty sure that normal people can not move a washing machine the
way they appear to be in that picture.

Sorry,
Zim.
