Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and former Rep. Trey Gowdy sparred over Twitter on Friday about the latter’s motives for retiring from Congress.
The South Carolina Republican announced in January 2018 it would be his last year serving in Congress. He had represented the state in the House of Representatives since 2010 and said at the time that he planned to return to the justice system.
Warren claimed Friday that Gowdy retired because he “just wanted a fat lobbyist paycheck.”
“That should be illegal,” she wrote in a tweet.
Gowdy responded that he was not planning on lobbying, now or ever.
“Perhaps you were cracking open a beer when that was announced,” he said, referring to an Instagram livestream Warren hosted earlier this week in which she was drinking beer.
"Don’t mind your criticisms. Just be more sensitive to facts," he said.

. @TGowdySC foamed at the mouth with power in Congress, then retired because he claimed he didn't enjoy it. Now it’s clear: Trey Gowdy just wanted a fat lobbyist paycheck. That should be illegal.

Since leaving Congress, Gowdy has taken a job that will focus on white-collar criminal defense and independent government investigations with a prominent South Carolina law firm.
