if I have to buy a used refrigerator for the shed in order to keep the spuds WARM.

Despite common wisdom, a refrigerator will not keep something from freezing. At that point it is just an insulated box. You might as well get a cooler with something to keep it warm. I don’t know if a fish tank heater can be set to 40°F, but that is the kind of device you would need.

Re: "I planted purple potatoes one year. Those things got huge.......pretty good, they were......."
You should have continued. The trickiest part of the whole thing, so far as I can tell, is preserving some for the next season so that the seed potatoes aren't an ongoing expense. I may have it easier than you. Once I have my shed built, they'll stay nice and cold out there from November to April. Hmmm. Maybe that won't work. I don't know if they can handle sub-freezing temps. It'll be funny if I have to buy a used refrigerator for the shed in order to keep the spuds WARM. Update: Seed potatoes will be damaged if they freeze. Some will still sprout according to the internet, but I don't want to deal with that.
