I'm beginning to get excited about the coming gardening season. I was watching videos on planting and harvesting potatoes and was surprised at how easy it should be. Those of you who are in cooler climates should consider growing them as well this year.

One thing I don't like is the apparent price of seed potatoes. They're expensive! About $12 for a 5 pound bag and another $7 for shipping. maybe I'll find them cheaper at a store, or bought in bulk - I don't know. I did learn that it's not advisable to plant store-bought potatoes. Apparently some are treated with a chemical to prevent or resist sprouting, and if they are planted they may not grow. I find that a little hard to believe since it seems like every time I buy potatoes, they wind up sprouting before I've even finished using them.

One seed potato will produce between seven and 20 edible potatoes. It depends on the specific plant - two that are side-by-side may have wildly different results, and on the variety of plant. I'm currently thinking of ordering red Potomac and some white variety that likes New England. There are plenty of YouTube videos that make recommendations and show how it's done. Potatoes seem to be among the simpler things to grow. I just need to work the soil and stick them in the ground.

I will likely be planting in April.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
