Ive been thinking . . . and I'm pretty sure I am going to phrase this badly.
But, here goes.
I've been reading about socialism, and how bad it is, and most places say
socialism is bad because it removes incentives (to work hard). But I feel
that the biggest problem with socialism is at the top. Once the government
grants itself sufficient authority to enforce socialism, the rich and well
connected will use those levers of authority to enrich themselves - at the
expense of everybody else.
Yes, Capitalism does have its faults. I was telling one of my nieces that
I'd prefer to live in a Capitalist village - with three capitalist bakers
making bread for me to buy. She pointed out that one of the three capitalist
bakers would buy out the other two, and have an unholy monopoly.
She was right in that, but that is why we have anti-trust laws. We also have
anti insider trading laws, usury laws, the list goes on and on.
So, in a Capitalist society the government can, and should, make laws outlawing
the more egregious aspects of capitalism.
What happens in a socialist society?
Well, let me try to put it this way. With a capitalist government the government
can, and should, remove or punish 'economic criminals'. In a socialistic
society the criminals are the government.
