These first footprints were very distorted by the melting snow. But they're linear, not side by side like a human would leave. At this point, I already know what I'm following. Do you?

It didn't just walk near the house... it walked right up to it.

Under our deck! I'm glad our dawg wasn't in his yard when this critter came by.

I put one of my giant boot prints next to a track in order to give it some perspective. If it's a bear print, it's kind of small and awfully skinny. And bear tracks look like fat human feet. Then again, this is mushy snow... Maybe I'll find some that are better quality.

This one's better quality. And I . . . definitely . . . see . . . claw . . . prints.

Okay, that definitely *IS* shaped like a human foot. Which means . . . BEAR!!! Not a big one, though. (I put down a penny, again to put the size in perspective.)

Then two different trails came together. Note that the feet are different sizes. The upper track is much larger. Uh, mother and cub. No wonder my dog was so worked up last night.

They walked together for a while.

... and then went to town in the garden before leaving to nose around in someone else's yard. Hm. I still need to put away the tomato cages. No harm done by the bears, though.

The weather is warm - 45° today - and the driveway (which I cleared several days ago) is finally mostly free of snow. I was able to move the minivan up to the street - so it's the vehicle I'm going to take on Wednesday after all. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Before I went outside, I saw from my deck that someone had been walking in the yard... close to the house, in fact! Pretty small feet... so a kid. It might be an animal, though, since the melting snow can distort tracks and make them look bigger than they really are. Since I already had my huge boots (size 13 or so... big enough that my size 10 tennis shoes go IN them) on, so I grabbed my camera and went out to investigate.
