The facts: After President Trump claimed that his latest policy seeking to deny migrants asylum was blocked because an “Obama judge” oversaw the case, Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare public rebuke reinforcing the nonpartisan position of the judiciary by stating that America doesn’t have “Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” and that an “independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.” Trump was quick to counterpunch on Twitter, insisting that there are “Obama judges” who have “a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country.” Roberts’s decision to address the president was highly unorthodox — and there are many conflicting views on whether or not it was appropriate.
