OK.
The Old Sergeant told us how to wax the skis.
From head to tail - waxed that way makes the ski
slide easily in the forward direction, not so easy
in the reverse direction.

(Ski wax - I don't know if turtle wax or some such would work or not.)

The V is literally drawn in the wax on the bottom of
the ski - with the point towards the head of the ski.
Then, when one is trying to walk up the hill some of
the snow 'catches' in the V and gives one just enough
extra traction to enable one to walk up the slope.

Mind you this is a gentle slope.

Amazing what one remembers from forty or so years ago . . .

By the way, cross country skiing was easier and faster
than walking. (Especially on a well traveled ski trail.)

I'm not sure what waxing a "V" onto my skis means or how to do that. My trick for dealing with hills that need to be climbed is to turn around and go some other direction. I bet that's even faster than walking up 'em like you do.
