Some migrants said they would seek asylum at a U.S. border crossing

Why do they need asylum in the US? They say they face persecution back at home, but Tijuana is some 2500 miles from where they are from. Does that last 100 miles make that much difference? They say any country must provide asylum for refugees. Why is the US so much more responsible to them than Mexico?
