Well Babe,
I'm pretty sure there have been more than a few
non-Americans who enlisted in the American Armed
Forces because it does offer a path to citizenship.

U.S. immigration reaches out to military Soldiers and spouses
May 5, 2009

http://www.army.mil/article/20610/us_immigration_reaches_out_to_military_soldiers_and_spouses

Non-citizens have served in the U.S. Army since the American Revolution. In fact, almost half of Army enlistees in the 1840s were immigrants, and between 1862 and 2000, more than 660,000 military veterans became citizens through naturalization.

Today, about 35,000 non-citizens serve in the military and about 8,000 enlist every year.

According to Leslie Lord at U.S. Army Human Resources Command, many have used military service as a stepping stone to citizenship.

"It is also true that some Soldiers have one or more Family members, especially a spouse, who is not a U.S. citizen," Lord said.

assume you're referring to my article, "Trump, Gorbachev and the fall of the American empire"?

YES, THAT'S THE ONE.
============

I thought it was a pretty good piece, actually. Remember, it was published by the 'Asia Times,' and might therefore have a considerably different attitude toward the United States than we are used to seeing in our own publications. The author, clearly, isn't our biggest fan - but why should he be? He's not an American. He repeatedly refers to our "illegal wars" and speaks of our "insidious hold over the world."

I mentioned that in my replies. Oh no, the author is not our (America) biggest fan, quite obvious. However, I have chosen to take the high road here regarding him and the Asia times.

"I don't like you. I don't like that you, and almost the entire rest of the world, hate us. I have decided to hate you right back."
---------
Okay, that's opinion. His facts and reasoning were pretty good, I think. I agree that "these are the declining days of the last empire standing." I've said as much on this forum, many times

I think you might get an argument on that from Mr. Zimbler0.
-------------------

Decreasing aid to foreign countries and expecting them to pay for their own defense is, indeed, going to lessen the extent to which they kowtow to our whims. "The stick loses power as the carrot vanishes." Yup.

De, I resent paying for their defense when they would lob a nuke at us in a minute's notice. Do you think they would kowtow to our wishes/whims bec/ we're forking over our dough to them? (ok, so that may be true, as we have bases all over the world). However, whenever we have a vote at the UN, these very people have the absolute gall to vote against us. I RESENT THEM. Sorry, but I do. Also, they have to pay for their PARKING TICKETS in N.Y. This diplomatic immunity is pure bull chit. If I get a parking ticket in NY, I have to pay. So do you and all other Americans. Again, my apologies, but send the UN elsewhere and make the UN building a VA hospital. As an aside, my NY brother just got a parking ticket. $250.

---------

Many of the points made were interesting. For instance, the claim that illegal aliens are enticed into the country so that they can fight in our wars and gain citizenship. That's something you don't read here too often. I don't agree with it, but it's true that we do that and I could see how the rest of the world might therefore conclude that we actually want the illegal aliens.

I could be wrong, but I don't think they want to fight in our wars and gain citizenship that way. They want to cross the border and start collecting their bennies. Therefore, De, I don't agree with it, either. The rest of the world is nuts.
------------

I did catch one factual error, the claim that the US has "the biggest nuclear arsenal on the planet." if you check Wikipedia, you'll see that the US has under 7000 nuclear bombs, and Russia has under 8000. But that's nitpicking. It doesn't detract from my general appreciation of the article.

Wiki = I don't trust them, either. This is a site where you can change definitions, etc, right? Even if that's true about who has more nukes, it still gives me the chills. How many do you need?

They hate us. We hate them. It reminds me of Congress. Not funny.
-------------------

It doesn't detract from my general appreciation of the article.

You might want to go back and read zim's posts on this, and mine, too, as we were trying to debate this last night. ZIM was in agreement that your article forced us to see ourselves for what we are, and THAT THE ARTICLE you posted caused us to discuss our points of view.

------

Thanks, De.
