Correct. There are a couple other small things that could have happened, such as a solder joint may have come loose and that electrical path interrupted. That would be inside the alternator also. Have seen it myself.. A lot of easy fixes if one has a little patience. They are not hard to take apart...

I believe they do have brushes

Thanks for the quick reply. De will need to check the brushes, but I would also suggest that he check the diodes.
