It's a triple (at least) whammy.
First, anyone (especially women) can get anyone (especially white men) locked up for a long time by just claiming threatened violence. Trials don't take place overnight. They can take a year or longer to even begin, so if a judge thinks there's a chance that an accuser is telling the truth, a mere accusation can result in a lengthy incarceration.
Second, as ribit said, this will interfere with an accused criminal's ability to prepare for trial.
Third, large numbers of perps will flee once they are released. Most don't do it today because fleeing will wipe out whoever put up the bail money AND ensure that a bounty hunter who is considerably meaner than the average cop will chase them to the ends of earth, if need be.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
